Growing up in the 1960s

 Growing up in the United States during the 1960s was a time of significant cultural and social change. The post-World War II era saw a booming economy and a growing middle class, which allowed families to enjoy a higher standard of living than ever before.



However, the country was also going through a period of social upheaval, with the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the counterculture movement all having a profound impact on American society.





Family Life:

For families in the 1960s, the traditional nuclear family structure was the norm. Fathers were often the breadwinners, while mothers stayed home to take care of the children and the household.

Many families owned their own homes and had access to modern conveniences such as washing machines and televisions, which were becoming more affordable.

Families enjoyed a higher standard of living than ever before, but the country was also going through a period of social and cultural change.

Activities for Children:

Children in the 1960s spent much of their free time outdoors, playing games and participating in sports with their friends. Popular activities included riding bikes, playing catch, and jumping rope.

Board games, puzzles, and reading were also common pastimes. Television was also becoming more widespread, with many families having one in their living room.




Current Events impacting Daily Life:

Current events played a significant role in shaping the lives of children growing up in the 1960s. The civil rights movement, which aimed to end racial segregation and discrimination, was a major force in American society. Children watched as African Americans fought for equal rights, and many were inspired to become involved in the movement themselves.

The Vietnam War also had a profound impact, with many young men being drafted to serve in the military. The anti-war movement, which opposed the war and the draft, was also a significant force in American society.

Technology available at this time:

In terms of technology, the 1960s saw significant advancements in space exploration and computer technology. The first human spaceflight was completed by Yuri Gagarin in 1961, and the United States later sent astronauts to the moon in 1969.


Computers were also becoming more widespread, with the introduction of the first commercially successful minicomputer, the DEC PDP-8, in 1965.

Comparison to Youth from Other Decades:
